Drake Street

Drake Street

This is the link to download a Word version of my five-act street theater style stage play with Heroes of the Heartland on a magical street in Des Moines, Iowa. It was written primarily for Jr. High and High School students, in-class readings and other school uses.  It features two Otis Redding songs, Try a Little Tenderness and (Sittin’ on the) Dock of the Bay, which were permissioned for a set period of time by Time Warner at the time I wrote it in 2001, so any stage play production of it would need to re-request those permissions.

A few of the characters  you’ll meet include a young Amelia Earhart, an old George Washington Carver, his friend Henry A. Wallace with his new hybrid seed corn, radio announcer Ronald (Dutch) Reagan, the five founders of the National Negro Bar Association, Harriett Tubman, jazz pianist Speck Red among many others who together showcase a blend of individuals who each have a story of invention, creativity or perseverance.

It’s a great vehicle for classes studying writing our own home-town histories, interviewing and memorializing their stories and accomplishments.

Please use by permission.

And welcome to Drake Street!
